Captain Charles C. Manwaring (Gasconade Co.)

Charles C. Manwaring, was born June 25, 1832 in ?, the son of ?.

During the Civil War Charles enlisted in the 1st Gasconade County Battalion (a 3 month Home Guard unit) and served as Captain of Co.A (84 men). This battalion was organized in June, 1861, with a total of 473 men, and its services accepted by Gen. Lyon. These services consisted of guarding bridges on the Pacific Railroad, and in escorting provision trains from Hermann to Montgomery City, MO. It also participated in the expedition from Miller's Landing to Georgetown, in Franklin Co., MO. The 1st Gasconade County Battalion disbanded October 1, 1861, and reorganized as Hunhausen' Battalion USRC (3 years) in January, 1862 (also known as the Gasconade County Battalion Reserve Corps). In this battalion, Charles served as Captain of Co.A, commisioned January 06, 1862 but was not officially accounted for and resigned his commission. The Gasconade County Battalion Reserve Corps was limited from the nature of its organization to services within the State. It was consolidated with the 3rd MO USRC by order of the adjutant general, dated January 18, 1862 as the 4th MO Inf. USV. It was one of the regiments entertaining no idea of compromise with those attempting to destroy the Government. Charles then became provost-marshal of the congressional district. After the reserve corps was mustered out, Col. Robert Hundhausen was appointed provost-marshal, with his office in Hermann.

In the spring of 1864, while on a visit to his family, Capt. Manwaring was killed by a party of rebels as he was attempting to arrest one of them. The rebels were pursued, and one of them killed, while the others, abandoning theri horses, made their escape. The horses were sold, and netted the Government $600. Capt. Manwaring lies buried on a high bluff just east of Hermann, Roark Twp #4, S25 T46N R5W. The only GAR Post in Gasconade Co., the Capt. Manwaring GAR Post #320 in Hermann, MO was named for Charles.
